Cultivating Learners in the TJ School Outdoor Classroom

Pick up day for pre-orders will be Friday April 19th from 3:45 to 5:30pm in front of TJ School. We will have the remaining plants for sale as well so please stop by! 

Back for its second year, the TJ PTO native plant fundraiser is offering a selection of plants for sale to celebrate Earth Day in April. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the TJ School Outdoor Classroom. There are four species of plants available, these plants are native to NJ and will support local wildlife and ecosystems including birds and butterflies. These beautiful flowers are all perennials and will come back year after year. 

Planting these in your yard is a great family activity - plant beautiful flowers with your kids and support the environment!

All plants are sold in packs of 5 for $20 - a great deal for perennials! We are selling smaller starter plants known as “plugs.” These have robust roots in less packaging and will grow into the same big, beautiful plants you buy at the nursery (locally slightly larger plants go for $15-$20 each). This small size is better for the environment - less soil and water means less shipping weight and carbon emissions. They are easy to plant among tree roots and other established garden plants and a perfect size for children to plant. 

 Four Species of Native Plants for Sale:

Wild Columbine: (Aquilegia canadensis) Dry to moist soil, part sun to shade, 1-2 ft tall. Red and yellow blooms in April-May. Deer resistant. The native columbine is a graceful, low growing beauty. The drooping bell-like flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds, native bees and butterflies. It is a gentle self seeder that is a lovely addition to flower beds and can also be used in containers.

Foam Flower: (Tiarella cordifolia) Dry to moist soil, part shade to shade, 1/2 to 1 ft tall. White blooms in April-May. Deer resistant. Heartleaf foamflower, true to its name, has 8-10 “ spikes of delicate bottlebrush like pale pinkto white flowers. Benefits many pollinators. Attractive low growing foliage through the growing season.

Autumn Bride Heuchera Villosa: (often sold as Coral Bells) Dry to moist soil, part sun to shade, 1-2 ft tall. Feathery white blooms in August-September. Deer resistant. Provides beautiful and interesting ground cover in three seasons and attracts humming birds, butterflies and other pollinators while in bloom. This plant also does well in containers. 

Bluestem Goldenrod: (Solidago caesia) Dry to moist soil, part sun to shade, 1.5-2 ft tall. Yellow blooms in early to mid-fall. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Bluestem goldenrod is a keystone species for over 100 butterflies and moths and a late season nectar source for bees, butterflies and other insects. It also provides one of the final pops of fall color. This species is much less aggressive than other goldenrods. Note: Goldenrod does not cause seasonal allergies, it is often confused with ragweed but has heavy pollen that does not carry in the wind.

This fundraiser will directly fund the purchase supplies for the TJ School outdoor classroom.
